I know that in many places, we can never go home again: my own land will never again be spruce and cedar swamps fed by a river choked seasonally with salmon and steelhead. But I still work to create habitat for the wildlife using the area today.

A former research scientist, I take an experimental, observation-based approach to habitat restoration.  In the winters, I can be found in dirt-varnished dungarees, digging bareroot plants into sodden earth. I propagate my own plants and shop every year at Snohomish Conservation District bareroot sales. I try crazy things - build wildlife blinds with old wood from my house, brush piles with prunings and scrap wood to shelter salamanders, snakes and butterflies.  In fields that were once forests, I’ve posted raptor perches that will someday be eclipsed by trees.
